Ask Josh: Why Are The Rifle Barrels So Short?

Recently SIG SAUER introduced the M400 Predator, which I believe is actually a very well thought-out rifle that addresses many of the faults of other so-called predator hunting rifles. But some questioned the idea of a predator gun with a 16-inch barrel and asked if using a rifle with a shorter barrel makes sense. Barrel […]

Ask Josh: Are Carbon Fiber Gun Parts Worth It?

Today’s Ask Josh comes from Dale R. Dale asks a reasonable question after seeing some of my guns . . .

“What makes carbon fiber parts so expensive. I see you like them, but are they worth it for me?”

Dale’s question is more complex than you may think. The carbon fiber parts in question today come in the form of stocks, barrels, handguards, and accessories. This list grows all the time.

Ask Josh: Why Are There So Few Modern Semi-Auto Magnum Hunting Rifles?

Today’s Ask Josh comes to us from Mike W. who’s a new hunter . . .

Why are the majority of semi-auto hunting rifles chambered for weak rounds or small calibers? I want to go hunting with a magnum rifle, but there are only one or two companies that make a semiautomatic rifle in magnum calibers. Why is this and will that ever change?

Mike is one of many guys out there who bought into the ‘bigger is better’ mantra early on.

Training and Competition: Doing The Wolverine 5K

A while back — probably five or six years ago — I remember first hearing about the Wolverine 5K Tactical Adventure Race and thought it would be cool to take part. Of course I was in substantially better shape then than I am now and having participated to exhaustion in the 2020 W5K, I have some acquired wisdom and points to consider for you extreme athletes out there.

I ended up covering the event in a single article for a print publisher and, while it covered the general parameters of the event, I felt that this year it would be a good idea to break it down for more of an in-depth look at gear selection, training, and thoughts about what these competitions are really like…even down to the nitty gritty like how much water I consumed and mistakes I made in clothing.

Ask Josh: What Does Barrel Taper Do?

TTAG reader and fellow Marksmanship Training Center member Luke Skywalker (not his real name, but he wanted to tell his friends he made me call him that) had a question on barrel taper and just what it does for a rifle.

“My question is about barrel taper. I see lots of guys talking contour and I’ve been shooting heavy Savage varmint (contour) at 1K for years and I never needed a thicker tube.

Ask Josh: What’s The Deal With Folding Bolt Action Stocks?

Have a question for Josh? Email it to thetruthaboutguns@gmail.com.

Competitive shooter and CMP veteran Daniel P. asks the following . . .

“Why do all your bolt rifles have folding stocks, man? I’d never use a folder in PRS, and I’ve never thought they did much for anyone unless you want a cool factor. You seem to like them, but I just need to ask why when they are objectively less precise as a fixed stock.”

Daniel has a good point here in that it seems like there is a huge influx of folding stocks out there these days.

Running The Wolverine 5K: Pistol Selection

For my introduction post on the TTAG Wolverine 5K series, click here. This will give you some backstory on what this event is about.

To sum up quickly, the W5K is one of the hardest single-day adventure races out there. Since my first post on it, I’ve been made aware of some super long trek races and such, but I think that, while very tough, the W5K is still within reason for people to participate given that it’s not a weeklong commitment and still falls in the category of a ‘fun event’, unlike some that I’ve been pointed to.

Ask Josh: How Long Will a Pistol Last?

Today’s question comes to use from the general TTAG reader base. I recently did three articles with the P365, M17, and Colt M45A1. These reviews weren’t so much out-of-the-box write ups, rather they were 15,000-25,000 round updates. The comments in these articles yielded some confusion, so let’s take a look at how long you can expect a pistol lasts.

The first thing that I need to address here is that some people thought that the guns in those reviews weren’t ‘used’ enough or didn’t have what they believed to be enough wear.

Ask Josh: Building A Short Hunting Rifle

Today’s question comes to us from reader ‘London 35’ who asks . . .

I am interested in building a short barreled rifle out of the AR platform. I recently read your article about short barreled .308s and was wondering what your input on the matter would be. The goal is a small, lightweight, and maneuverable hunting rife to be used on deer and hogs at a max of 200 yards.

Running The Wolverine 5K: Choosing a Carbine

In my last post which you can find here, I detailed my pistol selections for the W5K. You can find my introduction article for the series here. This time I will be talking about carbine selection and my experiences with them last year in this event.

Based on the comments I occasionally read on TTAG, I think many of you find me an insufferable and arrogant millennial who has no business being a gun writer.

Running The Wolverine 5K: Choosing a Precision Rifle

Last year I did poorly on the carbine and precision rifle sections, the former because I brought a precision rifle-weight carbine and the latter because I brought a carbine-weight precision rifle. I had my priorities all mixed up and didn’t prepare enough for for the realities of the competition.

My major failings on the precision rifle course wasn’t that I brought a bad gun, it was just the opposite.

Ask Josh: GLOCK-Type Pistols…Should I Build Or Buy?

Ah yes, the GLOCK 40. Or is it GLOCK Nine? Problem solver? Whichever name you pick, Gaston’s Gat needs no introduction. When it comes to the market for semi-automatic pistols today, GLOCK still holds a top spot. And as a result, there’s a huge aftermarket for parts. That aftermarket is so large that you can make a GLOCK without any actual GLOCK-brand-GLOCK parts. You know, non-GLOCK GLOCKs.

Reader Jack asked .

Ask Josh: Is a 300 BLK Worth It If You’re Shooting Unsuppressed?

Sometimes things get stereotyped for a reason. I don’t see a need to further elaborate on this, as those of us who live in the real world already know it. Guns have the same problem in popular culture. M16’s (AR’s) jam and are unreliable. AK’s are in accurate, but indestructible. Hi-Points are never bought, only stolen, etc.

You get it. The 300 BLK was designed around suppressors, and reader Jeff A asks this:

Thank you for publishing the above referenced article.

Running the Wolverine 5K: Post-Event Analysis

It’s been a couple weeks since I completed the 2021 Wolverine 5K. I had the pleasure of meeting many, many TTAG readers at the event and was happy to interact with and hear feedback, which I of course will take to heart. The people I meet at events like this that inspire me to not just write about these competitions, but also to get in the trenches with the people that spend their precious time reading my ramblings.

AR-15 Rifle Basics: Understanding Iron Sights

There is literally no end to the number of items that can be mounted on an AR-15 rifle in some fashion, be it a high-end $4,000 scope designed for extreme range shooting or a rail-mounted bottle opener for extreme range drinking. Of all the things that you’re able to stick on an AR, though, the most common and seemingly least understood are iron sights.

Most people have a basic working knowledge of what iron sights are supposed to do, but often have very little understanding of what makes them work or what they are really good for.

The Challenge of Finding Remington 700 Parts in 2021

I have moved most of my custom rifles over to builds from Tuebor Precision. I’ve graduated to full custom bolt guns for most of my article production needs and I’m truly happy with my experience with Tuebor. But I’ve run into a problem recently with my legacy bolt guns, namely the few Model 700’s in my rotation, such as my tried-and-true 450 Bushmaster.

I’m not doing anything crazy, just trying to source and make improvements to my existing rifles when there is a scarcity of factory parts.

Quick Hits: Triad Tactical Shooting Gear

I’ve been a long range shooter for most of my life. It would be fair to say that I’ve been around the block on this stuff, and I’ve seen trends come and go in my time as a writer. What hasn’t changed much is the need for top-shelf support gear for these rifles and few do it better than Triad Tactical.

A Brief History of Triad Tactical

Triad Tactical was founded in 2001.
